San Franshizuko!

We were recently visited by Junya Matsumura from Tokyo, Japan - where he bakes bagels, writes zines, and runs a small press - Tabi Books! Junya used to live in Oakland ten years ago and was surprised to read about us in the Japanese mag Brutus (see post here for more info!) as we hadn't set up shop yet when he lived in the neighborhood.

San Franshizuko is his first zine and is a written and visual conversation of sorts with Jack Kerouac set in San Francisco. The title is a play on words - Shizuko is a Japanese woman's name, and is also the character that Junya embodies. He dresses as her in photographs and answers to quotes from On the Road.

The photographs are all taken in Tokyo, but are captioned with similar locations in the Bay Area.

The text is both in Japanese and English! We have limited copies of San Franshizuko - please take a look next time you are at ISSUES!

Junya's bagel store is called "Tabi Bagel" which translates to "Travel Bagel" and has been featured in Timeout Japan and many blogs! Please visit him if you are ever in Tokyo (and bring us back an Olive and Rosemary bagel, they sound amazing).

Zine Compilations!

Some of our favorite zines have been released in book compilations!

Add Toner begins where Despite Everything left off, featuring highlights from Cometbus #44-48 (1998-2002). In addition to the issue of Cometbus, included are unreleased short stories and artwork as well as a Lanky glossary!

Rad Dad is a local zine for... rad dads - recently named "Best Local Zine" by the Bay Guardian! Their new book compiles the best of the Rad Dad zine, with contributions from the Daddy Dialectic blog, and organizes them into different age groups, politics of parenting, and interviews with rad dads.

The Encyclopedia of Doris chronicles issues 19-28 of Cindy Crabb's autobiographical zine Doris. An inspiration feminist - Crabb tackles topics such as anarchy, addiction, and abortion (that's just just the a's!). For any grrl in your life.

Parkett is a world respected contemporary arts magazine published since the 1980s. Each issue focuses on three artists per issue - always with deep analysis and heavy imagery! They've featured artists such as Laurie Anderson, Matthew Barney, Francesco Clemente, and Bruce Nauman!

Through Our Eyes

We just started carrying this amazing book of photography from the Homeless Youth Alliance - a volunteer run organization based in Haight Ashbury that helps and empowers homeless youth to build healthier lives.

The HYA gave out 210 disposable cameras to 147 homeless, houseless, and traveling youth over two years so they could document their own lives and tell their stories. The photos have been grouped into different chapters - from portraits to traveling to cops - and gives a glimpse into the everyday lives of the photographers.

ISSUES is donating 100% of the proceeds to the HYA - so please come check out the book!!!!

The first issue of Lucky Peach has arrived at ISSUES and we are already drooling!

Lucky Peach is a new food journal published by McSweeney's and created by Momofuku's David Chang (Momofuku means lucky peach in Japanese!). Each issue will have a specific theme explored through essays, rants, photography, travelogues, and recipes- this issues is the RAMEN ISSUE (caps lock hit by Jennie :P).

Inside you will find among other delectable articles, the history of instant ramen (and an instant ramen battle), the science of alkaline noodles, a group rant with David Chang, Anthony Bourdain, and Wylie Dufresne, and a detour to the world's best potato chips!

In February of this year, Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozanni launched the online only "Vogue Curvy". Vogue Italia has followed up with three beautiful plus size models on the cover of the June issue! Famed fashion photographer Steven Meisel shot the stunning Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine, and Robyn Lawley in black and white for a gorgeous photoshoot.

This is the first time Vogue Italia has featured plus size models on their cover since 2000, hopefully there will be more to come! Come check out the issue next time you're in the store!

What is an academic planner you ask? It's a planner that starts at the beginning of the school year so you can start your school year off with a shiny new planner! Or if you lost your 2011 planner...or never got one!!! They begin in July 2011 and end in December 2012 (yes, that's 18 months!), so you will be set until 2013!

Editor Jeane Leiby and Assistant Editor Jessica Faust-Spitzfaden spoke to this subject when dialoging about the fascinating process of choosing what selections to be featured in this installment of the journal. Leiby comments in the Introduction:

“I learned that Americana means something different to everyone. An image of diner desserts—the ruffled frosting of cakes, pastries with their crinolines of cream hidden deep inside, all revolving in a glass case—comes to mind. I also think, in the suburban spirit of Americana in the 1970s (which informs my own particular nostalgia), of a family member of mine who was in charge of an ice cream truck for one summer. The Blue Sky Bar, from which he sold weed to the adults and Charleston Chews and rocket pops to us kids. All this is to say that there’s a great deal of choice when it comes to defining this term. Most of the pieces we received drew their subjects from the last few decades. Certain furnishings I saw a lot: Vegas and Elvis, road trips, mixtapes, sideshow figures, Ferris wheels, dust (as in dusty lanes and dirty farms), down-and-outs and murder—but these last few seem to show up whether it’s a theme issue or not. Our writers have a definition of Americana that’s specific to them. I often agreed and when I didn’t, it was unusually because a piece seemed simply American and didn’t have the yellow cast of an old photograph that makes it Americana. It has to have a little roller-skate grease on it—something more retro and less out of a history book.”

Leiby’s definition caused me to think about what images come to mind when I ponder what is specifically “Americana” to me. I think of the Oklahoma plains, large belt buckles and scuffed boots, desaturated mid-western towns, Texas roadsigns, fields of wheat and corn, the bar on dark and desolate Highway-41 near my parent’s home on the central coast that features jug bands and bluegrass on Friday and Saturday night. I think grain silos, the Las Vegas sign graveyard, motorcycle grease, the intricate weaving of a Native American blanket sold at a roadside stand, hot fudge sundaes with a cherry on top, buffaloes, cracked pavement, and skin weathered and wrinkled. These images are endless and expansive; Americana to me is that subtle crossover between a slick, Southern, and sullied past that permeates our hopelessly nostalgic culture.

Notable selections come from poet Jane Springer and photographer Edward Keaton, who perfectly present what—to me—captures Americana through a well-focused, wide-angle lens. I highly suggest picking up your own copy of Spring 2011 Southern Review of your own before we run out of stock!

These are 8.5 x 11 pre hole-punched pads with detachable sheets that will fit any standard three ring binder. Each notepad has a heavy duty cardboard cover and contains the same Moleskine paper you find in their bound books. Choose from 96 pages of plain, ruled, or graph paper!

We got two new styles of the "Passions" journals - Travel and Baby.
